    Talking about Karaoke on 19 Apr 2008

    hmmm...karaoke with the elderly has become our regular activities...that's a good sign and that means Hwee Seng has a regular commitment...heehee..这男生不错..对光明山老人有了感情..开始散发他的爱..他的活力..他的创艺..volunteers present on 19 April would have noticed a difference in the layout, decorated with colourful table cloth and flowers which made way for a relaxed environment associated with coffee and tit-bits provided by Mei Fang. It's all Hwee Seng's creative ideas.

    as we target to 'groom' more volunteers to sing along...we were glad and proud to present our new and promising stars..Seetoh, Kee Hoon & Jacqueline. ..never mind if it was a humble start...no one out there are professionals...we are the 'BRIGHT HILL STARS'. Of course, we now have Alice as our 长驻歌手 and we congratulate her for her maiden & confident performance!

    molly is like a 'butterfly' moving around engaging our elderly to join in the fun..very good initiative.KEEP IT UP.. while other volunteers too played their parts...singing along, tapping their fingers and/or toes...its all good fun! I LIKE IT!!!

    Karaoke on 19 Apr 2008

    I was very happy that my friend, Alice sang during the karaoke session last sat. She was an "old" friend of mine and we lost contact few years ago but got linked up again. You may not know this, Alice is quite quiet and she does not have many friends and she wanted to join me for volunteer work so as to better occupy her time during weekends as her husband usually works late.

    When she stepped into the home, she is very shy and is worried that she will give me trouble and she is also not ready to handle wheelchair, does not know what to do n how to approach the elderly. She speaks Hokkien but not cantonese. She feels a bit "out of place". I think that's 1 of the reasons, she dragged her mum along.

    She said to me quietly that, " Meifang, i dont know anything but i only know how to sing." I said, it's alright, you can sing for the elderly.

    I passed her the mic for our "Grand Opening" and she sang, "ni zheng mer shuo" by Late Teresa Teng. The audience including myself were captivated by her performance! Lay Leng said that she is like a "changed person" when she sings, sounds professional! Like a hermit crap, she really came out of her shell and gained confidence when she sings and she does it so well!

    And so, i "scheduled" her to sing every now and then so as to occupy her "effectively".

    Alice called me just now to thank me for giving her a chance to sing for the elderly and she said that our volunteers are very friendly. I told her ALL the BHEH volunteers are VERY nice people Wink. She also asked if the elderly enjoyed her singing and i told her absolutely!

    Actually, what i'm trying to say is ... Everyone of us has our strengths and weaknesses...

    "For every problem, there is an opportunity";

    "The right man is the one who seizes the moment.";

    "Love what you do, then you don't have to "work" any day of your life (or something like that)"

    Hope we can better ourselves each and everyday and stay happy n cheerful always!

    October 09

    A cheerful afternoon

    The afternoon of 6 Oct 07 saw the home elderly in high spirits... they were all in good mood, smiling freely, responsive to conversations and happily cutting stamps and tearing envelopes. Hmmm... it must have been the savoury carrot cakes which not only filled up the elderly's stomachs but left a lingering happy effect on each elderly to last them through the afternoon. Thanks to our hi-tea guys, Mun Hoe & Seeoh.

    A warm welcome to Cui Xian’s friend, Michael who joined us for the first time. We hope to see him at the home more often.

    Some elderly were aware that we cleaned up the store room on the previous Saturday. An auntie was concerned if we still had a place to keep the stamps and envelopes. I assured her that we are still using half of the room.

    As Yahoo Photos is closing, I took the opportunity to pull back two old photo albums and upload them to this blog. The photos featured two separate outings in April 2005 and May 2006 to an Animal Farm and to Chinatown Heritage Centre respectively. Please find some time to view  the photos and for volunteers who helped out on the two outings, it may be a good way to de-stress yourself by looking at those happy faces!!

    Cheers

    Stamp Cutting Activity - An intro

    The activity starts at 3pm and lasts for 1 hour every Saturday at the dining hall.

    Some 50 elderly residents of the home take part in this activity, which they very much look forward to every Saturday.  Our volunteers collect used envelopes from kind donors prior to the activities.  With swift, steady hands, the elderly folks cut off the stamps from the envelopes.  The stamps would be collected and sold to a stamp dealer while the cut envelopes shredded and recycled.

    Those elderly folks who may not be fit to or do not like handling of scissors would be encouraged to participate in the activity as well by helping to tear the cut envelopes before sending them for recycle.

    The stamp cutting activity has certainly helped the elderly residents feel useful, as well as improve their hand-eye coordination and keep their reflexes mobile.

    Proceeds from the sales of stamps are used for the following :-
    • buying weekly snacks (high-tea) for all the elderly residents
    • celebrations of festives such as Chinese New Year, Dumpling Festival, Mooncake Festival, and Winter Solstice
    • outings to places such as Singapore Zoological Gardens, Jurong Bird Park, and Sentosa

    So, isn't this a meaningful activity to be called?
